International trade law and international investment law are largely contained in separate but overlapping legal regimes, but both share the general objectives of providing security and predictability to economic agents and increasing world prosperity by reducing barriers to international flows of goods, services, and investment. This panel will consider whether the international trade and investment law dichotomy appears increasingly anachronistic, or whether each regime is maturing according to complementary principles. Is there a need for greater coherence?

The aim is to raise foreign direct investment to $2 bn a year. It's part of Raul Castro's reforms for an economy that has been under a US trade embargo since 1960. Many startup entrepreneurs and investors in the state of California are now starting to receive big bills in the mail for back taxes that they never expected to owe. In late December, California's Franchise Tax Board eliminated a deduction that had been available since 1993. This tax break was available to people who made money from selling stock they'd held in California-based small businesses for at least five years, as long as they reinvested their gains in other small businesses in the state. Essentially, it encouraged many people to repeatedly invest in small businesses — potentially a big deal for entrepreneurs and angel investors. UAE Bankruptcy Laws will not safeguard investors. We have received a lot of enquiries regarding the new bankruptcy regulations expected in the UAE, so it is important to keep a few things in mind: 1. The new laws will not cover personal liabilities, but will rather deal with corporate debt issues; 2. The new laws will not be retroactively applicable. The UAE frequently tries debtors and people with bounced cheques under fraud and breach of trust charges, not for the debts per se, so bankruptcy will not necessarily protect you from prosecution. Reports about new regulations in the UAE regarding debt and othe...

I've found that to succeed in property, investors must understand the Law of Accumulation which states that everything great and worthwhile in life comes about as an accumulation of hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny efforts or sacrifices. This means that everything that you do, or that you fail to do, impacts on the final result you achieve. It's an unusual concept to wrap your head around but once you understand it, you can start to fully appreciate how it can impact your accomplishments as a property investor. I've found that success rarely happens overnight nor comes about as the result of one single experience or breakthrough. Instead, lasting, genuine success gathers and accumulates over time. You have to put in countless seemingly insignificant efforts before you achieve anything w...
Uganda does not have a clear law limiting the number of foreign staff a foreign investor can employ and in which skill sets. That’s according to officials from the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control who appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Equal Opportunities. The officials also admitted loopholes in the issuance and clearing of work permits, especially at border points. As Herbert Zziwa reports, the MPs also queried the statistics of foreigners working in Uganda that was submitted by the Directorate.
